Specifically, I ran into this issue on one user's machine where there were no valid sound playback devices due to a driver issue. (See Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback and disable all devices to test for this.)
Speaker selectors are very straight forward devices. As you can see from the diagram below, you simply connect the speaker output terminals from your receiver (usually Zone 2 or assignable back channels) or amplifier to the speaker selector. You then connect each pair of speakers to the back of the speaker selector.
Press Windows key + R to open a Run window and type “ mmsys.cpl “. Hit Enter to open the Sound Properties. Go to the Playback and right-click on the 5.1 speakers that you previously configured and select Test. Note: Keep in mind that the name of your playback device might vary according to your soundcard.
Method 1: Using the Local Group Policy Editor. The Group Policy Editor can be used to prevent users from some of the Windows Settings. There is a specific policy setting that can remove the Sound Tab from the Sound Control Panel. There are two different categories in the Group Policy Editor; Computer Configuration and User Configuration.

2. Use Windows 11’s Settings menu. Hit the Windows key, then open Settings. Go to System, then navigate to Sound. Select the Volume mixer option, then will be opened the same window as in the previous solution. As learned before, just adjust the volume for each desired app, by changing the slider. 3.

Method 2 – Using the Audio Meters “Zero the mixer” – turn the channel gain, level and main mix knobs/faders all the way down. Set your microphone’s channel level to “unity” or zero (the position where you are neither adding volume or taking any away (attenuating)).
To discover the capabilities of the sound devices (mixers) installed on the system -- such as the available component types and control types -- run the soundcard analysis script. Windows 2000/XP/2003: When SoundSet changes the volume of a component, all of that component's channels (e.g. left and right) are set to the same level. .
